Leading the Global IoT Development: BaseN Catalysts Highly Awarded at TM Forum

::: events :::

Last week’s TM Forum’s Digital Disruption 2014 in San Jose, California, was marked with outstanding success of BaseN. All three Internet of Things (IoT) Catalysts BaseN was involved in together with high-level partners, were awarded for their excellence in driving innovation and industry standards forward. The TM Forum’s IoT program – lead by BaseN – brought together domains such as Smart Energy, Smart Cities and Digital Health, which are increasingly interconnected and critical to societies.

The catalyst “Smart Energy: Realizing the Digital Handshake”, lead by BaseN and including partners Hydro-Quebec, Birmingham City University, BC Hydro, Infonova, Esri, Ericsson and Integrated Architectures, was awarded as the Most Significant Contribution to Frameworx. The Smart Energy Catalyst successfully showcased how utilities can benefit from incorporating M2M and IoT. “With the Smart Energy catalyst we highlight our capabilities in, for example, complex electricity outage situations, where the error not only has to be singled out quickly to be fixed, but the system should also enable tackling the most severe problems first, e.g. getting power back first to hospitals, firefighter and police stations”, says Anders Viden, VP of Product Management at BaseN. The Smart Energy Catalyst was already awarded in 2013 as the Most Innovative Catalyst.

The “mHealth: Bridging the Divide” catalyst won the award for Best Application of Frameworx based on the outstanding achievements in building collaboration between healthcare and telecommunication industries. As a live and interactive part of this catalyst, BaseN performed real-time data collection of blood pressure, blood sugar and temperature data from volunteers attending the conference. BaseN further enables patients, doctors and possible other third parties to remotely view such health measurements with different degrees of insight into the collected data. Based on the data, the other catalyst participants, including Verizon, Orange and Ericsson, demonstrated how this and other kinds of health data could be integrated to their new eHealth service offerings and the entire digital health value chain. “The eHealth catalyst allows to remotely monitor patients’ conditions with alert functionalities that will trigger either a doctor to call the patient or a nurse or ambulance to be dispatched to the patient’s home – another complex real-time scenario”, adds Anders Viden. The eHealth catalyst was previously awarded for its Most Significant Contribution to Frameworx.

The third award-winning catalyst of Digital Disruption 2014 is “Smart City: Empowering Governments to Build”. It was recognized as the Most Innovative Catalyst. This catalyst contributes to developing Aguas de Sao Pedro, a city in Brazil currently undergoing a smart city transformation. The catalyst is the first step of the program of applying Frameworx to reduce the complexity and risk of implementing a smart city. The project was developed by Verizon, China Unicom, Telefonica, Esri and ISPM, with BaseN providing general oversight and real-world experience.

Finally, very well attended panel discussions on Internet of Things, with Anders Viden as a speaker, became a real highlight of the conference with serious thought leadership and concrete plans on how the Internet of Things will mold our future.
