Right at the Core of the Internet of Things – SPIME2018

::: events :::

SPIME2018, BaseN’s outstanding IoT conference, took place on September 11-12 at the Energy Discovery Center in Tallinn, Estonia. BaseN’s fourth annual IoT conference focused on the theme “from a handful of data to a worldful of data” and what it means for business, their underlying architectures, their IPR and ultimately, everyday life.

BaseN brought together customers, partners and academia alike to line out the importance of the IoT and spimes. Spimes are the core of the IoT, the primary objects managing physical manifestations – unlike digital twins which are merely a virtual replica and enables businesses to transform products into intelligent services.

The keynote was delivered by Bruce Sterling who coined the term spime in 2005, and Jasmina Tesanovic, woman in IoT. They both pointed out that we are only in the beginning of smart services and that there is a vital need for continuous improvement. The speaker lineup continued with Dr. Spilios Makris from Palindrom Technologies, who discussed about the issues and challenges of cloud computing and 5G Reliability, followed by Dr. Helen Cripps giving valuable insights of the ever-evolving marketing in the Internet of Things era.

Mr. Kushtrim Xhakli, CEO of Connected Baltics presented how Sigfox has reinvented connectivity for the IoT. Marjut Honkasalo, European Patent Attorney at Kolster Oy, discussed the IoT in view of IPR in her presentation.

As cyber security is of paramount importance, BaseN promotes security and situational awareness across industries, which are quickly adapting to new business models while utilizing Internet of Things technologies. Mr. Ari Knuuti, Director at Arctic Security Ltd discussed the security aspects in the IoT and highlighted that cyber security is becoming more and more important with smart devices serving as vectors to intrude smart appliances.

Mr. Hannu Pikkarainen, Head, Capabilities for New Business, Helen Oy and Mr. Egon Troch of Th!nk E shared their experiences on smart buildings and their data, and what is to come through the IoT within the smart living arena.

BaseN sincerely thanks all speakers for their contribution and is looking forward to hosting SPIME2019. If you are a spime expert or want to become one, get in touch with sonja.schubert@basen.net and you will be included in the planning for SPIME2019.
