BaseN and Vantaan Energia: IoT and gamification for a new energy saving community

::: news :::

Energy company Vantaan Energia launches a new of a kind energy saving competition among the tenants of smart apartment building Spinelli, located in Vantaa, Finland. Each of the 58 apartments comes with a real-time water and electricity management system that allows households with the same family size to compare their consumption behaviour among each other. In addition, tenants can compare their own consumptions of the current month with previous months in order to realise higher saving potentials.

Utilising these features, the competition is based on the monthly reports for both water and electricity use among same-sized households. The tenants simply forward their automatically generated monthly report to Vantaan Energia and each month the “greenest tenant” will be rewarded, as well as the lucky tenant in the monthly lottery that also attracts tenants for participating actively in this competition. The competition will last five months, from May until September 2016, and promotes reducing one’s carbon footprint as a fun, entertaining and social activity among the building’s energy saving community.

What is your own personal energy class?

“Nowadays we all know that our cars, electric devices and also more commonly homes have certain energy classes”, explains Timo Vitikainen, Business Manager at BaseN. “But more importantly is asking the question ‘How energy efficient are you as a person, what is your own energy class?’ The smart IoT service BaseN provides to the Spinelli residents helps answering this question and allows each household to contribute to a greener future.”

As striving to be more energy efficient is a global trend, bringing tenants closer to their very own water and electricity consumption patterns is a must for any new and retrofitted smart building. The saving potential on a large scale is tremendous and BaseN offers just the right Platform to power the energy savings of millions of households.

“Vantaan Energia wants to promote innovative easy to use services to make people aware of their consumption behaviour and energy saving potentials. This new engaging competition for Spinelli residents supports this target well”, says Iivari Airaksinen from Vantaan Energia.
