What you missed in 2020

SPIME2020, BaseN’s sixth annual IoT conference took place virtually this year on November 23. and focused on how to be a transformation leader – during a global crisis and beyond. SPIME2020 also highlighted why our business models have to be sustainable and fault-tolerant by default in order to not only survive but thrive at all given times.

BaseN brought together customers, partners and academia alike to line out the importance of the IoT and spimes. Spimes are the core of the IoT, the primary objects managing physical manifestations – unlike digital twins which are merely a virtual replica and enable businesses to transform products into intelligent services.

The keynote was delivered by Michihito Mizutani, Service Designer at KONE. Mr. Mitzutani highlighted the shift from product to service and how KONE’s traditional elevator and escalator business was already completely overhauled and how they opened up new markets. Michihito further highlighted that digitalization is bringing new levels of complexity and that Service Design helps to deal with it.The speaker lineup continued with Astrid Blanke and Frederik Graugaard Holm, Business Developers at Nordea. They presented how to find new revenue streams, even during a crisis, suggesting to focus on innovation, solutions that are desirable, feasible and viable, and to keep discovering, ideating and testing.

Mr. Jouko Koskinen, CTO at Fujitsu, discussed how to stimulate business activities during a crisis and the overall digital transformation that brings along increased safety and efficiency on a factory floor level. Jouko addressed clearly how factories are currently still very silo-driven and that there is still a lack of in-depth knowledge, which highlights the clear need to make them smarter. Our last speaker of the day, Mr. Chris Henderson of Trimble, shared his amazing insides on how to harness the digital transformation. Chris presented different areas of Trimble, e.g. Trimbles CrewSight, running on BaseN. He also emphasized that situational awareness is of utmost importance in any industry. Construction sites, for example, see a tremendous decline in costs due to effective resource management
