The world is full of things to be measured. Increasingly, there are also sensors to measure various things. All that is needed to turn this data into usable information is a way to integrate all these measurements and the computing power to handle even the largest sensor arrays. BaseN has them both; all you need is the imagination to come up with how best to deploy this capability.
Although the BaseN Platform was originally developed for IT network monitoring, the ability to integrate it with sensors and other measurement devices opens up new possibilities for using it in the utility sector and building automation. With the development of the BaseN MicroAgent, measurements can now be taken in the field and transmitted wirelessly to the BaseN Platform.
Existing implementations include weather stations, where real time data and pictures can be displayed and stored for later analysis. A grid of these stations could be used to provide a local weather service or as a backdrop for other measurements.
Large infrastructures, such as water pipes, could be monitored to detect leaks and optimize utilization. Sensors in dikes could warn beforehand about structural weakening.
A fully mobile implementation currently monitors a fleet of forklift trucks, determining maintenance needs. A solution is available for comprehensive monitoring of pumps in heavy machinery, where preventive maintenance is critical.
In the long run, RFID technology offers many exciting possibilities. With the processing power of the BaseN Platform, entire inventories could be monitored in real time. This would be especially significant in such cases as cold chains, where there is a requirement for the ability to demonstrate the correct handling temperature for each piece of inventory.
