BaseN has begun offering its services for energy monitoring. The most interesting development is BEAT (BaseN Energy Awareness Technologies), a system for real time monitoring and displaying of individual power consumption.
Studies since the 1980's have shown that, given immediate feedback, people can save 5 - 20 per cent on their electricity bills without significant lifestyle changes. So far the problem has been twofold: How to provide people with this feedback, and how to cope with the immense data amounts that need to be processed. The Internet and mobile communications have solved the first problem, and now BaseN has the solution to the second.
As energy prices continue to rise and people's environmental awareness increases, the demand for more timely and accurate reporting intensifies. BaseN can provide energy companies, grid operators or other organizations with the ability to monitor electricity usage over any amount of meters and display the results in real time. In addition to a possible new service for customers, the companies themselves can benefit from increased forecasting ability.
Real time measurement of a household's energy consumption
BEAT can be expanded in many ways. Combined with other electrical measurements, such as voltage, it becomes an electricity quality validation system. Adding inside and outside temperature measurements turns BEAT into a household energy efficiency measurement system.
More than just electricity
Since electricity is just a part of energy consumption, BEAT can also be combined with measurements for gas, central heating etc. The system can also be combined with systems monitoring, reporting on the status of the meter grid and alerting about errors.
BEAT is deployed just as easily as a regular BaseN Platform project, depending on the type of the meter grid. If required, the centralized system can be seamlessly integrated with the BaseN MicroAgent, which enables measurements from any place.
