26.02.2008 - BaseN presents MicroAgent for environmental monitoring
At the Celtic Event held in Helsinki on the 27-28 February 2008 BaseN will present some of its new innovative projects and service concepts, such as the MicroAgent solution for environmental monitoring.
The GIGA program, which is supervised by TEKES, is concerned with the research for converging networks and ubiquitous IT. Within the GIGA program BaseN undertook the development of a MicroAgent.
The purpose of the MicroAgent is to enable environmental measurements from a wide variety of sensors, both outdoors and indoors.
The MicroAgent can be deployed on a variety of platforms. It has since been used to monitor cold storages, gas pipes, pumps and weather probes. The most successful and most developed application of the MicroAgent is known as BEAT.
BEAT stands for BaseN Energy Awareness Technologies. BaseN's real-time energy measurement and visualization solution enables individual households to see their energy consumption in real-time with one minute granularity. This has raised considerable attention in Finland and other European countries.
The integration of very large amounts measurement nodes and a high measurement of granularity can only be achieved by leveraging next generation distributed grid computing technology. BaseN benefits from using grid computing in their main field of expertise, network monitoring and management, and leverages the experiences gained for general infrastructure monitoring.
"We have done intensive research and development in the field of converging networks. Presently there are some new services in the proof of concept stage where we apply the BaseN Platform to environmental monitoring” says Panu Alku, Product Specialist at BaseN.
BEAT is currently in its productization an adaptation stage. The commercial versions are expected to be available at end of 2008.
At the Celtic Event last October BaseN presented some of its innovative real time monitoring services, such as remote monitoring of pumps to prevent down-time in critical processes, weather stations for micro climate research and other applications.

About Celtic
Celtic is a EUREKA cluster and the only European R&D programme in ICT fully dedicated to end-to-end telecommunication solutions. Celtic will initiate and run privately and public funded ICT and telecommunications R&D projects. It is supported by most of the major European players in communication technologies.
Celtic projects are focusing at telecoms networks, applications, and services looking at a complete system approach. The size of the Celtic budget is in the range of 1 billion euro.
BaseN Corporation
Based on BaseN’s visionary proprietary technology, the BaseN Platform has changed the way organizations think of network monitoring and management. The BaseN Platform is built on a distributed computing grid enabling linear scalability, exceptionally high processing speeds, maximum measurement granularity and high resilience.
